Today, SAP launched the SAP Cloud Platform Blockchain for general availability, SAP's Blockchain-as-a-Service (BaaS). This will make it much easier to add blockchain capabilities to SAP
solutions and processes. Considering that 77% of worldwide transactions affect an SAP system, one can imagine what impact this can have. The Blockchain-as-a-Service solution is currently based on
Hyperledger Fabric and MultiChain. Ethereum will be supported soon.
I was never a big fan of the idea to have BaaS because this is in conflict with the fundamental idea of decentralization. And for the start, the SAP solution will run in the SAP data center providing nodes for their customer. But SAP told me that it will be possible to run also outside the SAP data center or even on premise. Deutsche Telekom is already involved in an SAP co-innovation project to fight smartphone theft, which is operated with external nodes. So it seems that a vendor lock can be avoided in the future in contrast to other BaaS solutions.
I think that is an enormous boost for Blockchain adoption in the business world and the start of an incredible journey.
